Action: Talk to Municipal Candidates about CETA

2011 October 30, by Chapter Council

The upcoming elections on November the 19th in Greater Victoria are a great opportunity to talk to candidates about CETA and privatisation of water and sewage infrastructure. It is time to find out where candidates stand on these issues of vital importance.

Ask your councillor/mayoral candidate if they endorse a permanent municipal exemption from CETA, as endorsed by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM)

Ask your councillor and mayor where they stand on privatisation of water and sewage infrastructure.

CETA, the proposed Canada Europe Trade agreement, is currently being negotiated, mostly in secret by the Canadian and European governments. The Council of Canadians’ website is a great place for all the information you need on CETA. The deal would give foreign corporations new powers to bid on municipal public procurements, including infrastructure and goods and services such as water and hydro, as well as the right to appeal decisions they feel were made for social rather than strictly economic objectives.

If CETA is signed it will:

  • Threaten local employment and “buy local” policies
  • Threaten our local democracy by putting corporate rights first
  • Encourage privatization of drinking water and wastewater services
  • Cause prescription drug costs to skyrocket by at least $2.8 billion per year
  • Allow big corporations to ignore or challenge environmental regulation

Here is a list of all-candidate meetings you can attend. If you do attend and issues of CETA or privatisation come up, do let us know at info(at)victoriacouncilofcanadians(dot)ca and we will spread the word.
