Get on the Bus for the Juan de Fuca Public Hearing – Tuesday Sep 6, 7

2011 August 30, by Chapter Council

Tuesday Sep 6, and Sep 7, Sooke

Join the Victoria Chapter of the Council of Canadians,  Forest Action NetworkThe Wilderness Committee, The Dogwood Initiative, Elders of the Pacheedaht First Nation, the Jordan River Steering committee and many other groups in opposing Ender Ilkay’s proposal for a 250+ vacation home and resort that will seriously impact the Juan de Fuca Trail. Many people on the CRD board are opposed to this proposal, but the province has  not allowed them to vote on this issue, and it is likely going to go to the courts as well. The public hearings next Tuesday and Wednesday are our final chance to get a word in. Here is a note from Zoe Blunt of the Forest Action Network detailing the plans for hearing. Remember, numbers will matter, and your opinions will matter if this goes to court.

Vancouver Island wildlife needs you. Please join hundreds of your friends and neighbours on Tuesday, September 6 for the official publichearing on the huge vacation home complex planned for Juan de Fuca Park. Speak up for the sea lions, otters, elk, and bears that make the park and the forests their home, and add your voice to thousands calling for a land-use vision that restores forests and watersheds. We have a strategy to stop this development. The first step is a large demonstration of unity at the public hearing. If the room isn’t big enough to hold us all, that could delay the final vote and get great publicity. So bring your friends!

Public hearing: Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7, 5-10 pm at Edward Milne School, 6218 West Coast Road. Please come to speak or bring a letter stating whether this proposal should go forward. This is the final public hearing on the resort.

The rally kicks off at 4 pm with traditional songs, drumming, and barbecue picnic on the lawn. Elders and hereditary chiefs of the Pacheedaht First Nation will be honoured. We’ve reserved two coaches so folks can travel in style. The charter buses leave from UVic and downtown at 3 pm. Sign up here:

At 5 pm, the hearing begins and we all march into the school theatre (at least, as many of us as can fit). Each person will have 5 minutes to speak. The strategy here is to bring forward every single problem with this proposal (there are hundreds!) to get them into the public record. Everything in the official record will be reviewed by the judge when we launch a legal challenge. (That’s the next phase!) This is the last chance for official public comment on this destructive resort proposal, so please speak out now. I’m told there will be a surprise announcement of a political nature on Tuesday evening. In any case, this hearing will go down in history — never before has there been a project so strongly opposed by so many. That’s why they’ve set it to go for two days. Some of us are camping out in Juan de Fuca Park Tuesday night to celebrate.
